Into The Woods
Pattenburg, Hunterdon County, New Jersey
04/26/2001

Moderate hike (one big hill). 20 minute hike from parking lot to box
NOTE (09/05/2006): This box has unfortunately disappeared. But, don't panic--there are plenty of other boxes to find! We'll be leaving this clue up on the website as a permanent memorial to a bygone era.

IMPORTANT NOTE (3/7/2002): The area where this box is hidden is covered in poison ivy during the spring and summer months, so it is suggested that you visit it in the late winter/early spring between hunting season and the return of the poison ivy in May. Tread at your own risk!

CAUTION: These woods are used for hunting from September through January, so either 1) wear blaze orange, or 2) stay out of there during hunting season! If you have any questions regarding the park, call the Hunterdown County Park Office at 908-782-1158.

Starting at the parking lot within Hoffman Park, walk down the hill. From the southwest corner of Lake Ma
nny, take the road that heads to the east.

You'll come to a junction of two roads: a paved road continues to the left, and a dirt road goes straight ahead. Take the road that heads at 96 degrees.

Continue along this road, then go 60 paces past the pond on your left (if the road curves to the left, you've gone too far). To your left you'll see a downed tree and, further in the woods, you'll see a hunter's tree stand.

From the tree stand, go 20 paces at 358 degrees to the two birch tree stumps. Then, go 15 paces at 285 degrees to two groups of trees. Then, 20 paces at 350 degrees. The box is located in the base of the 6-foot tall tree stump.
The entrance to Hoffman Park is located off Baptist Church Road in Pattenburg, NJ.

And now, the fine print: Waiver of Responsibility and Disclaimer: Letterboxing, like any outdoor sport, carries the risk of various and unforseen hazards (including, but not limited to, deer ticks and poison ivy). The Perfect Circle Letterboxing Guild support a policy of not knowingly placing letterboxes in areas that will create undue risk to the letterbox hunter. However, as conditions may vary, it is the responsibility of the letterbox searcher to become thoroughly familiar with the conditions in the area to be searched, to adequately prepare for those conditions, and to conduct oneself safely and responsibly with respect to those conditions and with respect to his or her personal abilities and limitations. The Perfect Circle Letterboxing Guild and the individual letterbox sponsors assume no liability for events which may occur related directly or indirectly to one's searching for a letterbox. Do not let children hunt for letterboxes unsupervised. By reading and utilizing this letterbox clue, you acknowledge the above conditions, and accept responsibility for your own actions, and agree to hold non-liable the clubs and clue writers/box sponsors, and further, agree to provide this disclaimer to any person with whom you share these letterbox clues.
